our home: diy ottoman

April 16, 2014

Have you seen those diy coffee table ottomans floating around pinterest?
I searched and searched craigslist for an ottoman that I could recover
and then finally came across this coffee table tutorial. Duh!
This is so much more my style and these tables are everywhere!

I spent some time looking for just the right one though.
I wanted a rectangle, cute legs, BIG and CHEAP.
I finally found this one for $20. Score.

I first painted the legs a cool, dark brown.
I mixed some paints that I already had on hand to get the right color.
Then I distressed them a bit with sand paper and added a clear finish.

It took me awhile to round up all the supplies.
It takes quite a bit and most of it is not cheap - especially the foam.

I found this fabric at Joann's and am in love with it.
Its the same yellowy green as the wreath on my mantle
and the pattern is kind of a velvety, flocked texture.

It took a lot of muscle and a little trial and error (thanks to my hubby and dad for helping!)
and its definitely not perfect but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
And more than anything, we have a place to prop our feet now!
My living room is slowly but surely coming along…

…and its only a matter of time before my children destroy this new piece.
They've already tried.

I love love love this! Every time I see photos of your home I am in love with what I see. I never thought to make a ottoman myself. This is so cool. I love the style and colors your picked. Will you do your own tutorial here? With a list of costs?
