halloween haze

November 1, 2011

Hello all!
Well, I just spent that last 8 days in Cancun and Isla Mujeras Mexico.
We ventured there to watch my little brother
marry his long-time high school sweetheart.
We had a great vacation but I would have to say
it was one of the strangest trips I've ever had!
Lots of photos & stories to come! :)

But first,
why not make things even crazier by celebrating Halloween
the day after you get back from a long vacation!?! :)
Knowing we would get home on the 30th I had to make sure all costumes
were ready to go before we took off.
With only a short panic due to Darth's missing mask,
the night went off {pretty much} without a hitch.
Jaymin was DETERMINED to be Darth Vader this year.
It's so not fun once your kids get an opinion about what they want to wear.
But I still have say over Jett
and I plan to play the cute card for as long as possible.
So due to my obsession with themes the little guy ended up as an Ewok. :)
These daylight photos were actually taken the week before we left.
As you can see, I'm not much of a face painter.
I should have left that up to grandma...
So for Halloween night I just stuck with a little brown nose.
The first stop of the evening was Grandma & Grandpa's house.
Or "grunpa & grunpa" if you ask Jett.
I love that you can see Jay's smiling eyes in this above photo. :)
Cute treat buckets my mom made.
Jetty loves his aunt "sassie".
I think he missed her while we were gone. :)
Darth showin' me some moves.
Grandpa feeding Jett an endless supply of skittles.
Here's a photo of a "real" Ewok.
I wanted to get Jett contacts that turned his eyes yellow
and paint his lips brown but I thought that might be a little over the top. ;)
His costume was super simple this year.
Which is exactly what I needed with such a crazy October.
I bought a brown sweatsuit from Wal-Mart
(the shirt even had an ugly graphic on the front),
and cut out an oval in faux fur and stitched it over the ugly graphic.
Very easy.
I found some faux suede looking fabric at Hobby Lobby
and literally just started draping it on Jett's head.
I would pin and tuck and cut and sew until it looked right.
That's what was so great
about this head piece - the more raggedy it looked the better!
I even considered rolling it in some dirt when I was done
but Jett went ahead and took care of the added grunge for me. :)
I used some left over fur and some fuzzy brown fabric to make the ears.
I didn't have any stuffing on hand so I used cotton balls instead. :)
3 in each ear to be exact. :)
I stitched those in the seam of the head piece,
then added some detailing with brown stitching and leather laces.
I was SURE that no one would know what he was.
My husband thought it was really funny
to keep saying "what a cute little bear".
I was pleasantly surprised by how many people knew what he was.
There are way too many Star Wars fanatics out there.

I hope you all had a fun & safe Halloween!!
Get ready for vacation & wedding post overload. :)

I totally agree that a lot of the fun goes out of Halloween once your kid gets to pick their own costume. My daughter is 4 1/2 and she wanted nothing to do with the spider or the ladybug costume I had picked out! Oh, well, she still had fun!
